Welcome to Foundations of Theological Education, your introduction to seminary studies and life at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. In the Start Here block, you will find essential information about the Foundations experience, what you can expect to learn, how much time and energy the experience will take, and how to effectively navigate through the experience. Please review the information below in the order it is presented. The information presented in the units that follow are crucial to your understanding of who we are, how we learn, how we worship and engage together as a community, and how to be an effective steward of your time and energy throughout your studies. This experience is required for all new students of all degree programs. Upon completion of Foundations, you will receive essential information on registering for courses for the upcoming term.

Unit 1: Introductions
In Unit 1, we begin with introductions and learn how we engage with one another virtually. The information below will frame who UDTS is as an educational institution through a welcome from our Dean and review of several key documents that structure who we are and what we do. Then you will have the chance to introduce yourself to us through a brief series of discussion forums and forms. Please review the information in this unit in the order presented. Each item will show completion after it is opened and the provided instructions are completed. This unit will take up to approximately one hour to complete.
Who We Are
Explore the items in this section to understand who we are together at UDTS. This section contains a welcome from the Dean of the seminary, the UDTS mission statement, a copy of the current UDTS student handbook/catalog, and an overview of degree programs offered.
In this section, you have the opportunity to introduce yourself to fellow new students as well as share information with UDTS that is necessary for student records. Please be sure to complete all items below. Note that some items may require login with UDTS username and password.
UDTS utilizes Moodle as the learning management system where all online learning tools will be housed. The resources in this section will help you become familiar with the primary learning tools that will be used by your courses as well as other technologies that facilitate communication and student records. Login credentials for these tools are universal and were provided to you via email following your acceptance letter.

Unit 2: How We Learn
In Unit 2, we will explore how learning takes place at UDTS. You will find information about our model for learning, resources that are available for students, and best practices for ethical scholarship. Learning at UDTS
In this section, you will explore how you will learn during your time at UDTS. You will be introduced to what it means to be a theological graduate student, the "flipped" classroom model most classes utilize to organize learning, and the value of integrity in your academic experience.
Below, you will survey the robust resources available to assist you in your learning. You will learn about the Charles C. Myers Library, the Academic Success Center, and Accessibility Services.

Unit 3: Worship and Community Life
Unit 3 reviews the dynamic worship and social elements of the UDTS community. You will explore how we worship together and how relationships are formed and developed into a robust community of learning and discipleship. Please review the information in this unit in the order presented. Each item will show completion after it is opened and the provided instructions are completed. This unit will take up to approximately two hours to complete.
Worship Life
Worship is the center of our life together. With opportunities to connect in person and online, we offer weekly chapel and prayer services throughout most of the year, and daily services during residencies.
In this section you will explore elements of community life at UDTS. This is a place where you will meet people who are 21 and who are 75. You will worship with your brothers and sisters who are immigrants or from around the world. We will share the Lord's Supper with our brothers and sisters who are LGBTQIA and those who are from a variety of denominations. What we all hold in common is the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ, who is the Head of the Body, and a call to serve all of the children of God. We do not require our students to subscribe to a particular faith statement or confession or social expression of values, but love all God's people as family.
Health boundaries allow communities and individuals to thrive and interact in mutually respectful ways. The resources in this section are made available to ensure an awareness of community health, viability and safety. Topics covered in this section contain references to sexual harassment and assault. These topics may be challenging for some participants, but they are essential for community safety and wellbeing.

Unit 4: Personal Stewardship
Unit 4 explores ways to steward your time, energy, and resources as a graduate student. The information below will expand on concepts of rest, sabbath, brain health, and financial planning. Please review the information in this unit in the order presented. Each item will show completion after it is opened and the provided instructions are completed. This unit will take up to approximately two hours to complete.
Financial Stewardship
Seminary studies require a significant commitment of time, energy, and personal finances. It is important to consider how you will steward your personal finances through the duration of your studies and beyond. The information in this section will ask you to consider your financial situation and construct a plan.
Your seminary education will create a significant demand on your time and energy. Many students carry additional responsibilities such as full or part-time employment, parenting or guardianship, significant relationships, volunteering for worthy causes, etc. This section emphasizes the importance of stewarding your time and energy well as a model for long-term thriving in ministry and in life.

Unit 5: On Campus Information
Resources in Unit 5 focus on being present on the physical UDTS campus. You may have an upcoming residency planned for August or be planning to attend classes in person on Mondays. All students, regardless of anticipated travel to Dubuque, should complete this section. Please review the information in this unit in the order presented. Each item will show completion after it is opened and the provided instructions are completed. This unit will take up to approximately one hour to complete.
Residency at UDTS
The majority of students will, at some point, travel to Dubuque for short-term residencies, usually held during the month of August. In this section, you will find information about upcoming residencies including schedules, travel itineraries, and more. If you do not have plans to attend the upcoming residency, you may skip the residency specific information. For students planning to attend, please be sure to review all information below.
