1. What words/descriptors would you use for the UDTS understanding of "intellectual, human, spiritual, vocational" learning and formation?
"personal" speaks to our commitment to see spiritual and human growth for the student themselves -- not just their ability to do a church job.
"pastoral" imagination and identity are also part our focus as a school committed to training leaders for the church.
"praxis" is a favorite word of practical theologians that describes an cyclical approach to learning (and being) that involves action and reflection. Learn something (content), try something (action) , reflect on it (reflection). Repeat. While I use this word in introducing IN782, I know the basic rhythm also shapes other courses.
"in context" - refers to our approach of intentionally drawing on and drawing out the formational and learning potential of the places and communities and relationships in which our students find themselves (all over the country).
"in community" (or at least in relationship) is also somewhat distinctive of our approach.
2. What direct and indirect ways do you see us following through on our overarching approach to learning and formation?
Online learning matches with the "in context" formation. It plays out directly in IN782, in which students purposefully immerse themselves in a niche of (non-church) social life in their local community, in which they practice presence, given and receive hospitality, offer engaged listening, and bear witness to the gospel.
SPMs in churches form pastoral imagination and identity.
