Music Lessons MUSC 110
Welcome to music lessons!
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to
further your development in technique, repertoire and performance ability.
Repertoire is selected (or approved by) your professor, based on your previous
experience, and as a means towards bettering your skills and understanding of
the instrument.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Private musical study is intended
to develop with the student:
1. An understanding of how the repertoire studied is
constructed (analysis).
2. An understanding of performance styles of varied repertoire
(performance).
3. An understanding of how to produce pitches comfortably and naturally
(technique).
4. An understanding of how to read music notation, both pitch and rhythm
(ear-training).
ATTENDANCE: If you have an unavoidable conflict with
a lesson time, please email your professor at least 24 hours in advance when
possible. If an illness comes -up suddenly, please notify your professor as
soon as possible. Do NOT come to a lesson if you are in ill health, for the
sake of your own well-being and that of other students and faculty. Make-up
lessons can be arranged if reasonable advance notice is given and schedules allow.
SUPPLIES: Please bring your assigned music (or music
downloaded to a tablet), pencil, your instrument, and a water bottle if needed.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS: Students should check in with
their instructor for a practice plan.
Daily practice will be much more beneficial than
"cramming" just before your lesson. Practice rooms are available on a
first come/first serve basis in the Heritage Center. We will activate your ID
card to allow you access to the rooms.
FINAL RECITAL: Participation is required in either
the recital or lessons showcase at the end of the semester, unless granted an
excuse prior to the event. Those taking lessons for no credit (through the
choir/band program) are welcome but not required to participate.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Electronic Communication: Students are expected to check
their UD e-mail accounts and Moodle page regularly for course updates and

devices not medically necessary will be turned off during class times unless
