COURSE DESCRIPTION

This introductory course will equip CLP students with the tools they need to exegete a passage, write a manuscript, and preach a sermon.

In keeping with the stated purpose of the CLP program (“to strengthen the church through quality theological education for lay persons”), this course meets the following curricular goals:

·       Be formed by, live in, and minister out of Scripture and the historical and theological tradition of the church.

·       Educate and equip individuals and congregations to live and minister joyfully and faithfully as part of their own denomination and the ecumenical church.

·       Integrate theology and practice in all areas of life and ministry.

 

ASSESSMENT

In order to receive a passing grade, students must meet the following criteria:

•An exegetical summary of the sermon text. (1-2 pages)

•A paper identifying the four elements of your sermon. (2 pages)

•A complete sermon outline (1 page)

•A written sermon (4 pages)

•A video of the sermon.

•Regular on-line participation in discussion forums and weekly assignments.

•Self-assessment of your sermon.

 

All CLP courses are taken on a “Credit” or “No Credit” basis. Students will receive a completion letter from the UDTS Distance Education Office at the conclusion of each CLP course and may request a certificate of completion at that time. Students may also request continuing education units (CEUs) from the Distance Ed Office.

4)    Wilson, Paul Scott. The Four Pages of the Sermon. Revised and Updated: A Guide to Biblical Preaching. Nashville, TN: Abingdon Press, 2018.
