Inquiry Stage Process
Inquiry is a period of time for the church and the inquirer to explore and test the sense of call to ordained ministry through a network of caring, supportive relationships. The consideration of one's talents in relation to the variety of Christian ministries will better inform and prepare the inquirer for possible future ministry. Ideally, when you have arrived at seminary, you will already be an inquirer. If not, the following steps should be followed:
- You must be on a congregation's active member roll for at least six months.
Apply to your session to be enrolled as inquirer. Some sessions have specific requirements to be fulfilled before becoming an inquirer.
Forms for applying as inquirer - Session notifies your presbytery's Committee on Preparation for Ministry (CPM) of the application. CPM should provide an orientation or related materials to your session to help them discern God's leading with you.
- Session interviews you, makes a recommendation to the CPM, then selects a session liaison for you if you are recommended for inquiry.
- CPM will interview you and make their recommendation to the presbytery.
Additional inquiry enrollment forms
CPM may require a psychological assessment prior to or following application for inquiry. These evaluations can be useful for helping you to discern strengths and weaknesses for ministry and create a growth plan. - Presbytery enrolls you as an inquirer. This date begins a covenant relationship between you and the presbytery.
- As long as you are under care, you will consult at least annually with your CPM to review how God has been growing and guiding you and to set goals for the coming year.
Annual consultation forms
Even if not asked for these forms, take the initiative to set your goals and share progress with your CPM. This is not only useful reflection for you but demonstrates initiative and commitment to the preparation process.
